Upacara Mandi Bunga

This is one heck of a late entry. Just realized next month will be the sixth month of our wedding monthniversarry. It is rather worrying how I haven’t managed to sort out the wedding album. Meh.

Today, I will share with you some photos of the Upacara Mandi Bunga (Direct translation from Malay to English: Flower Shower Ceremony?) which took place a few days before the wedding.

It was done solely to keep the tradition alive and it makes the wedding more memorable. Back then, the ceremony was done to ward off negative auras and cleanse the wedding couple. They say after a flower bath/shower/whatever you coin this ceremony, the wedding couple will look stunning and glowing with positive aura. Oh yeah, not forgetting, smells good from all the flower.

My opinion? I’m still looking for that glow or ‘seri’. Haha. All I got from the mandi bunga was a cold shock. Imagine having an cold outdoor shower on a cold day. Brr… Also, it was a bit silly of me to forget to request for flowers with scents to use for the ceremony. Oh well, it is the thoughts that count!

Enjoy the photos!

I should have worn something better. It crossed my mind there would be photographers and videographers to record the whole ceremony.

Perhaps too early to function. I still remember this day very well. Earlier on, my grandmother on my uncle’s side (I have many grandparents, very complicated to explain…) helped me with the body scrub treatment. The scrub paste is homemade, rice grains with fresh turmeric. She said I should have done weekly treatments months before in order for my skin to look absolutely glowing for the wedding day. Well, now I know, you know. So, bride to be’s, book that spa treatment early and do it often! :P

Some families have this tradition where they prohibit the bride to be and the groom to be from seeing each other a week before the wedding. I guess this tradition differs from one family to another.

In the olden days, most weddings were results of matchmaking. Thus, explains the origin of this tradition. The wedding couple would only find out how their partner would look like on the day of the wedding solemnization. Initially, I thought of doing this but it would be inconvenient. During the final few days before the wedding, both Aslan and I were so busy with last minute preparations. Hence, it is not so relevant. Even my paternal grandmother told me not to bother with it. With smartphones, it is kinda irrelevant. Can Skype bah. Or FaceTime. Hehehe.

I was laughing at Aslan because he had his sarong up so high and was told to tie it lower around his waist. Hehe. I stopped laughing when I was told to take off my top and just pull up my sarong higher. Note: I was wearing a one piece swimsuit underneath.

"Oh God, please, make this cold water warm..." Haha. Just kidding, I was asking for His blessings.

Aslan's main concern about the shower was showing off his man boobs. I told him, it is normal for him to have man boobs, what is not normal if he didn't have any at all...

As much as we enjoyed the ceremony, nothing was more awkward than having an outdoor shower with spectators and filmed on both stills and video. Once in a lifetime, indeed! Hahaha.

I will post more wedding related entries as soon as I sorted out the albums. Till then,

Love always,
E.

  1. HeLLo Effa!
This is my first time looking at how Mandi Bunga is done. All these while, I had the idea of Mandi BUnga is only for female and it’s done by dipping your body inside a barrel full of flowers. Well, influenced by cerita hantu in TV bah….

    Congrats on your wedding yeah?

    • Thanks Willie! Haha. I think this is a moment that should be shared by both bride and groom. It used to be only for the bride but why not, eh? Thank you for your kind wish!
