Twelve more days to Christmas. This is the time when people start to feel the ‘festive’ pressure of getting things organized, better yet, done.
Some worry about what to get for their loved ones. Some worry about the decoration. Some worry about what to wear. Some worry about who to go out with. Some worry about the over commercialized aspect of it. But some just worry about where to eat on the eve of Christmas.
Lucky for you, I know exactly where to go! Before you read the following post, let me ask you a few questions.
- Do you want to avoid crowds and traffic jam?
- Looking for somewhere with peaceful and romantic but still has festive ambience?
- Abundant car park?
- Something different and unique?
If you have answered yes to all of the above, then you will love The Raintree Restaurant Christmas Eve 5-Course Set Dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

Countless amount of Christmas trees scattered around BCCK and one greeting you at the entrance of the Raintree Restaurant!

Tastefully decorated, you don't want it to be over the top, do you?
Headed by Sarawakian born Chef de Cuisine Virginia Kedit, the set dinner offers global cuisine prepared in French Classic Cooking style using Japanese Presentation Skills! In short, fusion fine dining here in Kuching!

Know which cutlery to use first? Simple, start from the outer most set going inwards!
Dinner begins with not one but two appetizer! What is dinner without a nice roll of hot bun. Spread it generously with butter, oh, magnifique! Tres bien! (Suddenly become all French because I usually relate fine dining to French cultures…)

Holy cow. This is the mother of all buns. It's not the look of a bun that matters, but the sound it makes! Crunchy but still soft! Perfect!

Blinis Tower of Lobster Medallion, Smoked Salmon and Creme Fraiche
Fine dining 101: Blini is basically Russian style pancake. I guess you can also call it a crepe.
This was PHENOMENAL. I almost cried when I had the first bite. I thought the smoked salmon was good, but the lobster was crazy!!! It was cooked perfectly, not too raw nor well done. Seafood paired well with the creme fraiche. The saltiness of it neutralized the creamy and rich texture of the creme fraiche or simply known as fresh cream.

Why, hello lobster! Mmm...

Warm Ravioli of Duck Confit and Pumpkin Puree
This appetizer was not as creamy but tasted beautiful. A relief after all that fresh cream and sinful seafood! Savoury and sweet at the same time because of the pumpkin puree. Also came with sautéed spinach!
The next dish reminded me a lot of UK. I spent almost three weeks in Scotland and London last winter and trust me, I couldn’t resist not having a cream based soup for my starter.

Cream of Cauliflower with colorful Peppers and Crouton
You might think that cauliflower might not have much taste but surprisingly, this cream based soup was so delightfully delicious, it brought back memories of good times in the UK during winter last year. It warmed me up and the pepper trio of green, red and yellow added an Asian kick to it.
The third course was a palate refresher. In French fine dining, the palate refresher, usually in the form of a lime or lemon sorbet is served after the fish course. Main reason is to cleanse the palate or tongue and refresh the senses.

Exotic Ginger-Lime Sorbet
This sorbet is truly Asian with the ginger element. Ginger, spicy and sweet, goes well with bitter lime. Once this sorbet arrives, eat it quickly before it melts!
Now, onto the main course. You have two choices.

Slow baked turkey roulade with wild mushroom and truffle oil, served with sautéed Brussels sprouts, caramelized chestnuts and cranberry sauce.
OR

Slow grilled marinated sirloin on spicy potato, wilted spinach with blue cheese, buttered carrot, Brussels sprouts and beef jus.
Now, the only dilemma is… Why must there be a choice? Can’t we not get both of these extremely scrumptious and juicilicious dishes?
Honestly, I can’t say which one is a better choice since they are in their own league.
If you want to have a true Christmas meal, then you would want to go for the turkey. It is also recommended to those who are watching their weight during this holiday season (Best example, me…). It has all the right elements in order to qualify as a Christmas turkey. Besides that, I see no point in having a whole roasted turkey since you might only just eat a few carvings but a roulade offers you the right amount of meat. Therefore, you don’t overeat! The certified halal turkey is imported from Australia, so, for Muslim patrons, eat doubt free!
As for the sirloin, if you are a beef lover, this is the dish for you! I experienced an out of this world food orgasm at the first bite. Love at first bite? Cheesy but true. It was marinated beautifully in a mixture of dates, dijon mustard, garlic and chilli powder, obviously a more Asian take on Christmas meal.
A solution to this dilemma is to order both sets. In this context, if good food makes you happy, then money definitely can buy you happiness. :p
After an exciting ride over main course, it was finally time for dessert!

Christmas Pudding with Raspberry White Chocolate Parfait
Thankfully, the Raspberry White Chocolate Parfait was not too creamy or I would have died of good food overdose. I must be frank, it is not easy to come up with the perfect Christmas Pudding sans the alcohol. The Christmas pudding was a bit dry but after a rich 3 course meals beforehand, I don’t think you would complain. :p
This promotion is available for dinner on December 24, 2011. Priced at RM 125+ a person, it may sound expensive but with the quality and amount of food you are getting, it is considered cheap. Why, in Singapore, a 14 course set dinner (small portion by the way) at Jaan Restaurant cost RM 1200 per person! So, in comparison, it is quite a reasonable price for fine dining!
