Detox, Diet and Exercise…

After my honeymoon, I have gained quite the amount of weight. It is quite obvious really coz the first thing people  would say when they see me is, “Wow, you so fat now… How was your honeymoon?”

image

Tell me I am fat and then change topic so I won’t be able to respond to that remark.

Honestly, it bothers me… A lot. I am now obsessed with how I look, especially with my bestfriend, the flabby tummy.

Still, my priority to lose weight is for health reason and looking good for my self and subsequently, others is just an added bonus.

I must admit it was tough to start the healthy lifestyle after the no fuss honeymoon phase which lasted about two months but I managed somehow.

Today I ate less than 500 calories and burned a total of 437 calories through jogging and running.

Who knows, once I lost weight, pregnancy would be easier?

I will blog about that when the time comes.  Wish me all the best!

E.

Do I Really Need SO Many Bags?

Hello everyone. You girl is alive and well. Just a bit swamped with work and life in general.

Update on my latest job hunt: Failed. Apparently they are not so keen with part timers. If I had known that earlier, I wouldn’t have bothered. Oh well, maybe I should wait until next year and get a full time job. December will be quite a busy month for me. I am excited. You will find out why sooner or later.

I realized I haven’t been updating this blog with my travelogues of Copenhagen, Dublin, the rest of New York, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon National Park, Los Angeles, Hawaii and South Korea. Drat. I seriously do not know where to begin. I mean, I haven’t finished choosing wedding photos to be printed, what more of the honeymoon.

My slow laptop is preventing the process and I am in the midst of waiting for the launch of the latest Mac Pro desktop.

Oh yes, baby, wait for mama!

Oh yes, baby, wait for mama! (Photo Credits: Martin Hajek)

Click here to find out more about this sweet invention from Apple.

Some may think this wish of mine is going overboard since this baby could cost me one Celine handbag. And this debate of whether I should buy a gadget or a handbag always give me a splitting headache. It always lead to the one million dollar question:

“Do I really need so many bags?”

The answer is obvious though. I am a woman and there cannot be one too many bags. The more the merrier. One is never enough?

Before the bag lady years, I was a ‘carefree’ woman (Meaning: Not obsessed with the latest must have it bags) whom does not give a damn about branded bags. My bags were often brandless and well, simple. Sometimes tacky. But most of the time, I never bothered with handbags.

My transition into a bag lady begun in December 2008. At first, it was a simple Mango tote. Next, a Topshop handbag. Then River Island. It became more high end when I was introduced to the world of Long Champ. The next thing I know, boom, a Louis Vuitton Neverfull GM. You’d think I’d stop at LV but no, then along came Chanel, with Celine and Hermes tagging along. Gah.

This story will never end because Dior, Givenchy, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Goyard and Prada just to name a few are calling me with their beautiful handbags! (Meaning: My wish-list is never ending) I always question myself the same thing over and over again but at the end of the day, the bag lady triumphs and somehow my bag collection keeps on expanding.

I love my bags like one would love their pets or well, babies? Haha. Mental. If it rains, I’d rather get wet and shield my baby. I handle each and everyone of them with so much love and respect. I have spent so much to buy them, of course I would treat them like royalties.

I can’t comprehend why I value bags more than gadgets. I guess, with proper care, they last longer and will stay relevant for a very long time. I could hand them down to my children one day. Some brands have investment worthy pieces. Hermes handbags, for instance, could be sold for a higher value in the near future (Not that I plan to sell ANY of my bags…).

Gadgets would only be of use for a certain period and could be obsolete anytime, especially given the fast rate of technological advancement these days. For instance, today you buy an Apple iPhone 5s and tomorrow they would announce the release of the new iPhone 7! (Of course this is purely an exaggeration but you do know what I am trying to imply here…)

So, there you go. I do need that many bags because life is too short and precious to bicker with myself whether to get it and regret the decision of not getting it the next day and end up frustrated for the rest of my life because the bag I would like to get is completely sold out or worse, seized in production. End of story.

As for the Mac Pro… Well, if you could transform into a totally cool handbag, I’d so buy you. For now, mama would settle for a Boy Chanel handbag. Oh yes.

Blog more later!

Love,
E.

Lunch at Absolute Tribal, Kuching

Fancy eating in a historical building? Now you can do so at Absolute Tribal! (Photo Credit: Absolute Tribal Facebook page)

Fancy eating in a historical building? Now you can do so at Absolute Tribal! (Photo Credit: Absolute Tribal Facebook page)

Even though I was born and raised in Kuching, sometimes, well, most of the time, it is not like it is on the back of my hand. And Absolute Tribal is one of those places I would consider as Kuching’s best kept secret when it comes to dining and at the same time, preserving our culture and heritage.

1380231_10151654516896568_614624225_n

For the course of its existence in Kuching, I never knew it had a restaurant and a home stay. I identified it only as a culture and heritage preservation centre.

So, today’s lunch really did surprise me in this most pleasant way ever. The CEO, Gerald Goh said this place is very well known among tourists and locals are slowly catching up too.

I must insist for us to embrace the idea of being a tourist in our own backyard. Absolute Tribal is about preserving our culture and heritage through handicrafts demonstrations and classes, local food cooking classes, galleries and food.

I hope this brief introduction is sufficient because today’s entry focuses more on the food that Absolute Tribal has to offer.

Magna Coffee: A wonderful coffee and tusk concoction.

Magna Coffee: A wonderful coffee and tuak concoction.

This is the hottest drink of the moment. I did not take it but my friend said tuak makes the coffee sweet and somehow it reminded her a lot of milo. Gerald said it was a customer’s feedback that led to the creation of this drink. Who knew a simple remark such as “How come serve coffee in a wine glass?” could sparked a drink revolution? Whoa…

Three Layer Dragon Fruit Juice

Three Layer Dragon Fruit Juice

My favorite fruit is Dragon Fruit and this magical drink is even a favorite! It is a mixture of dragon fruit juice, milk, Sarawak organic honey and sour plum. OMG. Genius!

Prawn Umai

Prawn Umai

Absolute Tribal uses fresh ingredients brought daily from the local market at Kubah Ria. Their version of prawn umai is simple but oh, the dipping sauce or sambal, made this dish heavenly. In fact, when you dine here, do request for extra umai sambal. The best!

Medium Salmon Fried Rice

Medium Salmon Fried Rice

I seriously thought it was large because the portion is super generous. Salmon fried rice is Absolute Tribal’s most popular specialty dish. Simple and healthy. With this dish, you do not need anything else. Still, request for umai sambal. The bomb. Hahaha.

Pansuh Ayam

Pansuh Ayam

One of Sarawak’s national dish apart from Laksa Sarawak and Kolo Mee. Absolute Tribal’s version of this classic dish is just right, the herbs are not overpowering. If you are feeling under the weather, this dish can heal you! Hehe.

Teo Chew Oyster Pancake

Teo Chew Oyster Pancake

To be honest, I am not used to a crispy oyster pancake but this Teo Chew version is not bad. I love the flavor of the pancake and the crispy texture. The oyster sauce compliments the pancake very much.

Memoirs of A Basil

Memoirs of A Basil

Apparently this dish is part of a special menu honoring Michelle Teoh. It is fried basil with fried century eggs, chillies and minced chicken. A bit unfamiliar but it is divine, especially when taken with Absolute Tribal’s homegrown daun sireh. Yumm…

Prawn and Coconut

Prawn and Coconut

This Bidayuh inspired dish reminds me a lot of Thai curry. It is very aromatic, not only soaked in coconut everything, it also has Sarawak pineapple in it. Mmm… Beautiful flavor!

Laksiam with Seafood and Terong Dayak

Laksiam with Seafood and Terong Dayak

Last and not least, Absolute Tribal’s no 1 selling dish… Let me introduce you to the Laksiam. A fusion of local Sarawak food and Thai food. Absolute Tribal has two kitchen; one is local chinese food kitchen and the other specializes in Thai food. In between these great food, comes the fusion Sarawak Thai food.

Absolute Tribal makes their own laksa paste and this is good stuff. The Laksiam is AHMAZING. Also, you can adjust the spicy level of your dishes. Simply inform your waiter whether you want it to be regular spicy, spicy or extra spicy. Regular spicy is mild. I’d suggest spicy. Then again, what is spicy to me differs to you. Well, one way to find out is to try it out!

It is official, ladies and gentlemen, that Absolute Tribal is indeed, the best kept secret in Kuching. Aren’t you lucky I am sharing this very precious information with you? I absolutely love everything about Absolute Tribal. Their price is decent and food portion is huge. Parking is ample and convenient. What more can you ask for?

Birthday Reunion at Bella Italia, Kuching

We celebrated Mimi’s 26th birthday and Dave’s Sarawakian homecoming at Bella Italia situated at RH Plaza. I have heard about this fine place for quite a while now but never had the chance to try. We were planning to play bowling at BDC straight after lunch and we found Bella Italia most strategic in term of location.

Photo session before we start eating...

Photo session before we start eating…

The deco is simple and their menu offers a variety of Italian favorite consisting of starters, pasta, pizza, main courses and a few selection of desserts. Beverage choice is quite limited though.

Among the drinks we ordered: Iced Milo, Iced Lemon Tea and Iced Chocolate

Among the drinks we ordered: Iced Milo, Iced Lemon Tea and Iced Chocolate

One glass of Iced Lemon Tea is around RM6 and I personally think it is a bit pricey, considering the size of the glass used. It tasted okay though but the price did not justify the whole experience.

Since I am perpetually on a diet, I decided to have a bit from everyone’s plate. Hahaha.

Salmon Fettucine RM22

Salmon Fettucine RM27

I absolutely love this dish. Salmon was fresh and the portion is huge! Definitely a favorite of mine.

Beef Bolognaise

Fussili Beef Bolognese RM18

I have never had bolognese in this style before. I think they add cream to it. A bit unfamiliar but it is nice.

Linguini Carbonara

Linguini Carbonara RM26

What can go wrong with Carbonara, right? Bella Italia’s version is just right but I must admit, I don’t mind if it was richer in taste. Hehehe.

Caesar's Pizza without Anchovies

Caesar’s Pizza without Anchovies RM26

Pizza dough was satisfactory but it would be nicer if they were more generous with the tomato sauce.

As for dessert, we tried the Chocolate Pasta. Yea, I was surprised myself when I saw it on the menu.

1376982_10151654484621568_984858501_n

Chocolate Pasta RM11

Frankly, this dish did not meet my expectation. I personally think it is in the menu solely for novelty reason. It does not look appetizing and taste wise, disappointing. I would recommend for them to use a better chocolate and add a bit of cream or ice cream to make the dish more delicious and interesting. The idea is there but not executed properly.

Overall, we had a lovely time at Bella Italia. Everything came up to RM123. That’s about RM23++ per person. Bella Italia is not your traditional Italian restaurant but they still can offer your delicious food. I will come back again, the Salmon Fettucini is calling me!

Tarts & Juice Island, Kuching

I am absolutely passionate about food but once you mention desserts, I am fanatic lunatic. What is life without desserts, right? Anyhow, a friend of mine invited me to check out this new dessert place at ST3 Mall. It is a gem of a find because they serve really good and health boosting juice plus sinfully delicious tarts made from the freshest and best ingredients. Mmm…

What is this place called, you ask? Well, welcome to Tarts & Juice Island. You might think it is weird to associate tarts with juice because people would usually pair it with coffee or tea but here, tarts and juices walk hand in hand in perfect harmony. Its founder, Yven Teo, can recommend what juice to take with your tart of choice. For instance, if you pick a fruity tart, he’d pair it with something suitable that will compliment the taste. Similar concept to food and wine pairing.

You will be torn what tart and juice to choose at the entrance...

Once seated inside, you will find the wall where previous diners and well, fans of this awesome place will leave their messages and blessings. Plus recommendations!

Tarts & Juice Island has five types of tart. They are the traditional tart (Original and Nestum), Assorted Fruit and Sweet Tarts, Celebration Mini Tarts (Which require special order), Giant Tart (Usually for birthdays or special occasion) and Savory Tarts (Only available on weekends). In short, spoiled for choice! The price of these tarts varies according to type.

Decent price considering the high quality of the ingredients they use in making the tarts.

I really love their traditional tarts. It is the right balance of dry and moist. The Nestum is worth a try but nothing beats the original!

My favorite: Oreo Tart

Let me deconstruct the layers of the assorted fruit and sweet tarts: First, the flaky and yet moist crust, then the egg tart filling, followed by cream cheese filling and finally the topping! OHHHHHH. Heaven awaits you at the first bite. Hahaha. Orgasmic, I dare say!

Their selection of juices is not disappointing! They have all sorts of juice and some combines more than two fruits for either wellness, slimming or beauty benefits. They use fresh and high quality imported and local fruits and they do not add sugar! How awesome is that?

Apple and Red Plum Juice

Furthermore, Tarts and Juice Island also offers a variety of freshly baked buns and by the weight dried fruits.

Melissa @ Poppies, The Spring

It was in January 2013 when I first met Melissa. I remember that day very well. I was on holiday in Bangkok when I fell in love with Melissa.

However, our love union took a while to happen. In Bangkok, my size was available but the design did not please me.

Wait. What am I talking about? Melissa is not a person but a footwear brand from Brazil. The design is young and quirky, made from this sweet smelling rubber croc but better than croc’s material and best of all, ridiculously comfy! In short, jelly shoes!

I searched high and low for Melissa but often, people would stare at my giant feet and tell me no size before I even ask for a size 42UK.

This tale comes with a happy ending because I got my first pair of Melissa’s from Poppies at the Spring!

image

My first Melissa!

Better yet, Melissa’s Doris design is an absolute dream come true. It reminds me a lot of Valentino’s spiked heels. Best of all, Poppies sells only authentic items and the quality is guaranteed.

Of course I wanted to buy EVERY DESIGN in my size but that is a bit too much so I figured one is better than nothing. (I guess Poppies will have their own Melissa stalker/enthusiast frequenting the store daily soon…)

image

Mama will bring home you babies in time!

image

Wings on your heels!

Lucky I do not have kids yet because the children’s line is super kawaii!

image

Dorris in cream is also nice but they did not have one in my size.

image

Price range for Melissa is a bit steep but you cannot discount comfort and quality. For instance, the one I bought cost me RM 359 but hey, once in a while, this kind of purchase is acceptable. At least it is not as pricey as Valentino which is easily 10x the price.

Another good thing about my purchase today? I bought a limited edition Sereni and Shentel denim headband for RM30!

image

Three to choose from and I chose this design!

Due to the Spring’s RAD campaign lasting until October 20, shoppers whom purcased more than RM250 will get a RM49 rebate off the limited S&S headband.

Each customer is limited to one redemption and hurry, the amount is very limited!

So, what are you waiting for, get a pair of Melissa’s from Poppies, the Spring now!

Love,
E.

The Dress

Back from the honeymoon and now browsing through bazillion photos of the wedding. I will feature some highlights but for now, I would like to share a photo of my favorite wedding dress…

Four months since the big day and the dress still fits. Relieved beyond words could ever express!

Sharing Planet, Kuching

Today I was invited to Sharing Planet at Stapok for a food tasting session. The last time I dined here was almost three years ago and well, a lot has changed. I am glad for the better. The place is bigger and there are more delicious food variety.

Nine years ago, Sharing Planet started out as what one would call a playground or a hobby. However, throughout the years, it became a serious and thriving business that it even has a second branch at Ban Hock. Over nine years of its existence, I have only been here twice.

I guess it is due to the growth of dining venues in Kuching made me forgot about Sharing Planet. Wait, now I remember. Due to my diet, I rarely dine out for dinner. Almost never.

Anyway, Sharing Planet started out as a place where friends and travelers alike can share their travel memories or tips at the restaurant. Sadly, that concept is just a memory of years gone by. These days, Sharing Planet is known as the restaurant that serves delicious big portion food that is worth sharing.

Sharing Plane restaurant serves Western Fusion cuisines. Today, we tasted some of the chef’s recommended items from the menu.

Gotta love this message!

Gotta love this message!

Chicken Caesar Salad

Chicken Caesar Salad

Honestly, you can share this dish between four people. It is generous and without the mayo dressing, it is still nice (In short, if you want the healthier version, avoid the dressing)

We were speechless when the waiters brought in the main courses. We thought starter was huge. Wait ’till you see the rest of it!

Chicken Chop with Ice Cream

Chicken Chop with Ice Cream

When I saw this on the menu, I couldn’t believe my eyes. What on earth is this? Ice cream on chicken chop? I asked the owner how did this dish came along and he said he was inspired by something of similar style on a Japanese television show. It is definitely weird but it was not that bad.

Mix Grill

Mix Grill

The mix grill is huge and decently priced. For RM28.90, you get a piece of fried fish, chicken chop, grilled lamb, a foot long chicken sausage with cheese and a generous dollop of mashed potatoes covered in delicious black pepper sauce. Dang. Kenneth, the owner, is thinking of making this a challenge dish. Finish within 15 minutes ON YOUR OWN, you win a prize and a photo on their wall of fame. Maybe one day. Kuching is not prepared. Or are we???

Cajun Fish

Cajun Fish

I absolutely love this dish. Simple and yet so flavorful. I always love cajun dishes and this is not disappointing. The homemade tartar sauce is fantastic!

Spagetti in Carbonara Sauce

Spagetti in Carbonara Sauce

When it comes to Carbonara, it is hard to please the very picky eater, Aslan. Sharing Planet wins him over with this simple yet very flavorful creamy dish. Aslan’s favourite. My Aslan has very good taste and this you ought to try if you are a fan of carbonara.

Double Cheesyland

Double Cheesyland

This dish is a reminiscence of my American honeymoon. Two pieces of deep fried chicken topped with not just sliced cheese but thousand island sauce. Absolutely calorie suicide but once in a while, it is acceptable.

The chef, Mr Zul, was more willing to offer us more dishes to try but we were already full. Secretly, I was saving space for dessert. And the chef read my mind. He served us the most simple and yet so divine chocolate lava with vanilla ice cream. I almost end up in tears upon my first bite.

Chocolate Lava

Chocolate Lava

The beauty of this dessert is how it is not sickeningly sweet. Just the right level of moistness and the chocolate lava is perfect. Vanilla ice cream made the dessert creamy. I know where to go when I need some sinful chocolate fix. Hehehe.

Why, Printer, Why?

Okay, it is partly my fault for not changing the printer’s black ink cartridge but I got turned into X-Men’s Storm by my ancient printer…

Don't piss me or I will make your day a living hell... Or at least a tropical storm with lots of lightning...

Don’t piss me or I will make your day a living hell… Or at least a tropical storm with lots of lightning…

It is funny but I don’t think my employee would be would appreciate this little joke. Yes, we are talking about my CV here. Hahaha. Alas, I have a passport sized photo stand by and I will fix this mess in a jiffy. I hope my future employee does not mind blue ink. Black ink is ridiculously low, therefore I had to resort to color. At least it is not pink…

Gosh, this is such a disaster. Am I desperate or enthusiastic? Very thin line and that is rather alarming.

Honestly, I think I am ready for a full time job. I had my break. The wedding ceremony is done with. Went on a long honeymoon. Time to make some money. So I can buy that Birkin. This will take a while.

Anyway, wish me luck as I will be submitting my resume tomorrow!

Rice Krispies Treat

20131005-132423.jpg

When I was a kid, I loved making this treat for my siblings and I. It can be a bit sticky and really sweet, not to mention the high calories, but it is not called a treat for nothing.

The most important key of this recipe is patience. The marshmallow will take some time to melt at a low heat. Anyways, here is the recipe:

3 tablespoon butter
300g of marshmallow
6 cups of Kellogg’s Rice Bubbles

Prep:
Melt butter in saucepan on low heat. Add marshmallow and melt completely.
Add and stir in rice bubbles until completely covered.
Move to a tray lined with wax paper.
Leave to set and cut in square blocks.

image

If you can't wait, put it the freezer.

image

Ready to be served!

Optional:
If you want something sweeter, you can melt some baking chocolate and cover the treat with it or sprinkle with chocolate rice, nuts etc of your choice.

Love,
E.
